License types in New Jersey

• Salesperson. The entry-level license. Works under a sponsoring broker.
• Broker-salesperson. Holds a broker license but works under another broker.
• Broker. May operate a brokerage and supervise licensees. Requires additional experience and education.
• Referral agent. A limited license permitting referral activity only.

Pre-licensing education

Required through an approved provider, in classroom or online formats depending on the provider. Hours, content and cost are set by the provider within the Commission's requirements.

Examination

Administered by the Commission's testing provider, covering national and New Jersey-specific content. Scheduling, identification requirements, fees and retake policy are set by the testing provider.

Sponsorship and issuance

A salesperson license is issued in connection with a sponsoring broker, who submits the application on your behalf. Until that is complete, you cannot practice.

Transferring your license

Moving to a new brokerage generally involves your current broker releasing the license and your new broker submitting a transfer to the Commission. Review your existing independent-contractor or employment agreement for notice obligations, pending-transaction handling and any fees before you give notice. This is worth a conversation with your own attorney if the agreement is complicated.

Continuing education and renewal

New Jersey licensees complete continuing education on a renewal cycle set by the Commission, including required core topic hours. Track your credits; late compliance carries consequences for your ability to practice.
