Monmouth County, New Jersey
Freehold Borough and Freehold Township — a historic downtown, regional shopping, and a wide spread of housing types.
Freehold Borough and Freehold Township are separate municipalities. The Borough is a compact, walkable, historic town of roughly two square miles containing the county courthouse and the downtown business district. The Township surrounds it and is far larger, with suburban subdivisions, regional retail and more recent construction. Tax rates, housing stock and character differ, so it matters which one a listing is in.
The Borough's housing stock is notably older than most of Monmouth County — Victorians, colonials and early-20th-century homes on smaller lots within walking distance of Main Street. Downtown Freehold has an active restaurant and retail district, the Monmouth County Courthouse, the Hall of Records, and the Count Basie–era Freehold Center streetscape. The American Revolution's Battle of Monmouth was fought just west of here, and Monmouth Battlefield State Park preserves the site.
The Township is predominantly post-1960s suburban development: single-family subdivisions, townhome and condominium communities, and several age-restricted developments. Freehold Raceway Mall and the Route 9 corridor make this one of central Monmouth County's main retail concentrations. Lot sizes and price points vary widely across the township.
Route 9 is the primary north–south corridor, connecting to Route 18 and the Garden State Parkway to the northeast and Howell to the south. Route 33 runs east–west toward the shore and west toward the Turnpike. Interstate 195 is a short drive south. NJ Transit bus service on the Route 9 corridor serves New York commuters; there is no passenger rail station in Freehold.
Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Turkey Swamp Park and Durand Park provide open space. Downtown Freehold hosts events, farmers markets and a walkable dining district. The Township's recreation department maintains extensive athletic facilities.
Borough of Freehold and Township of Freehold maintain separate assessment, construction and zoning offices. Monmouth County offices are located in the Borough. Verify with the correct municipality.
Fair housing
These guides describe geography, housing stock, infrastructure and general market considerations only. We do not describe or rank communities by the characteristics of the people who live in them, and we do not comment on safety, schools as a proxy for anything, or who would or would not 'fit' somewhere. All information is believed accurate but is not guaranteed. Buyers should independently verify anything material to their decision — including taxes, flood zones, utilities, association rules, zoning, school assignment and municipal requirements — with the municipality and their own professionals.
